Moving In

Hello Everyone, I am new here and moved here to San Diego this week from Utah. I have been to other cities in Mexico and have mongered there such as Hermosillo. I guess my biggest question is how is TJ with safety? My dad is a former marine and has told me tons of stories of him going down to TJ with his marine buddies and having the best of times but tells me that TJ is not the same and is much more dangerous now. Is this true? and what is the safety compared to other cities in Mexico?

Frankly, outside of a tiny pueblo in Mexico, I'd put TJ as one of the safer destinations.  The cartels know to stay away from tourists and tend to be precise in their targeting towards other cartels.

Read up on the policia bullshit here as they're probably the biggest problem but we haven't had a lot of reports of issues with them recently.

In short, if you're coming down here, stick to the main areas, don't be an asshole, and remember that you're a guest in the country and you'll be just fine!

That is good to know! I've had my run ins with the policia outside of some bars in Hermosillo so I know how that goes... I do have a lawyer in Mexico who is also a good friend that lives in Hermosillo so I am sure that will give them a good reason for them not to mess with me since he's only a phone call away. Yeah my biggest concern was the safety of the city as I kept hearing that it was super dangerous. I'm probably going to make a trip down to TJ this weekend, What would you recommend for a good experience down in TJ? I have been to some bars in other cities in Mexico where they have putas... but I want to experience the fun that TJ has to offer. I am going to be going solo as I don't know anyone down here yet

Hong Kong is a good starting point.  If you want to venture out of there, simply go across the street to Bar Tropical.  For food, I would suggest that you stick to Azul, which is in the Hong Kong building.  You have to go out the back entrance of Hong Kong into the famous alley.   The entrance to Azul is to your left as your exit. Azul is up on the second floor with a balcony that lets you oversee activities going on in the alley.  Good food, very entertaining and safe.  If you are feeling more adventurous, you can go out the front door of Hong Kong, turn right and walk to the corner.  Look kitty corner and you will see the entrance to Chicago Club.  Aside from options inside the clubs, you can look at Agency Options, but many agency girls won't come to the Zona Norte.  if you are staying overnight, I would suggest getting a room at Hotel Ticuan.  It's escort friendly and a short cab ride from the border and Hong Kong.  Good luck my friend and we look forward to a trip report!

To start, don't drive down to TJ just yet.  Get a feel for the city before you drive over.  You can take the Blue Line trolley all the way to the border.

Do you have Global Entry or SENTRI?  If not, scope the threads here about them and then apply but it's taking anywhere from a few weeks to several months to get approved.  There doesn't seem to any rhyme or reason to how they approve applications.

Hong Kong is the epicenter of the Zona Norte.  If you come across anytime after around 2pm, the Zona shuttle is up and running and it's free (well, tip the driver a few bucks) straight to Hong Kong and just a few steps outside the door of customs.

I do have Global Entry, I live in North County so I was thinking to at least drive close to the border and then walking across. I don't think I would trust driving my car into mexico ever. Are there any good spots near the border I can park and it would be safe for a couple of hours or even one to two nights?

There is a parking lot right next to the entrance to Ped West  You'll pay $10 to $20 a day depending on when you go.  You can also park along the blue line a few exits North (for free) and ride to the border.

It looks like Hotel Ticuan is all boked out this weekend, any other places to stay that you'd recommend?

If you are worried about safety I would stay close to Hong Kong.  I've stayed at both Cascades (above Hong Kong) and Hotel Rizo d'Oro (above Bar Tropical), but they have both jacked up rates in the last few months.  Love Motels are another option (La Mansion, Premier, etc.) but some are only 4 hrs at a pop and you don't have in and out privileges.

I'd recommend Hotel Caesar, Av. Revolución 1079, Zona Centro, 22350 Tijuana, B.C., Mexico•+52 664 685 1606, as an alternative if you can't book a room at Hotel Ticuan.  It's a little closer and cheaper but still nice.  The biggest downside is the beds are not as nice as Hotel Ticuan, bathrooms are tiny, and there is no elevator.  Thankfully there's not many floors; 3 I think.  If not, Hotel Cascadas and Hotel Rizo in the zona norte as mentioned above are good alternatives except for the no escorts thing.

I would look into Grand one plaza Hotel as it's newer and almost the same location as Caesars. Has room service, a bar, and a restaurant on property

Check out My "Home away from Home" Hotel La Villa de Zaragoza! It's located a block away from Av. Revolution on Madero and 7th, but relatively tranquillo Hotel with nice large rooms, with A/C, the freshly remodeled rooms start at $117.00 USD and the older (pre-remodeled) rooms start at $75.00 USD. You can drop off your stuff, shower and either walk (checking out all the sights and sounds of Tijuana on Av. Revolution-I recommend) or simply get an uber or Taxi. It only takes 15-20 minutes to walk (leisurely)from the Hotel to Hong Kong, so I would recommend walking to the Clubs.

Enjoy Hong Kong, Tropical and of course, Chicago Club before grabbing a Blue/white taxi across the street from the Chicago Club-They are family-owned and cool guys-you won't be ripped off-just tell them Vamos a "Hotel La Villa de Zaragoza" it used to be $5.00 USD-verify PRIOR to boarding your Taxi-it's probably $6.00 USD to $8.00 USD now! I usually tip them a buck or 2! They are cool!

It's worth it, especially if you have been drinking-also, I would not recommend walking back to the Hotel in the evening hours there are some Policia and low-lifes who may harass you.

Have FUN!!!!

First trip? If you can get a reservation at Hotel Cascadas or Hotel Rizo de Oro  that is where I would go. Right in the heart of the action, no cab necessary and take as many chicas to your room as you want. Get a vip card from Hong Kong or Tropical bar for discount on room, free drink,  other bennies. Pays for itself in the first weekend. I don't see any need to be traveling around the city for a hotel room and then paying for nasty short time rooms near the clubs when you want to bang a chica. Keep it simple for your first trip 👌 Since you live close by Tijuana you will have plenty of time to branch out later. Good luck!👍🍻💃🥳

For safety purposes, DO NOT ever speak with anyone in Zona that is brown skinned and speaks English! Even if their Anglais is crystal clear and it sounds like they went to a University in, let's see,...meh I'll just throw it out...Orange County...oh okay let's blindly throw out a random example...Cal State Fullerton...Run!!! They are up to no good. If they say they want to read some John Milton or Ayn Rand to you; or "hey, esse, I just bought this fucking book and it says to find some carnal named Waldo. Help me out with this shit, foo'"; or "Sir, may I please have your opinion on if Shohei is getting traded and to where"...run!!! There may be some brown skins who "say" they just want to speak English with someone...no, bolt! It's a ruse. It's even worse when said person cusses you out in German after you start running.

Heads up in the future try to book a hotel a week in advance. Most get sold out by the weekend especially during summer.

Yes it is true in bad parts of the city. Don't leave central areas (past zona Rio south or east) until you know the city better. I think it is safer than some and more dangerous than others.

  • 2 weeks later...

and be sure to check out adelita (when it reopens.)

Senda Norte restaurant is around the corner from tropical bar and also a very good place to eat. and you can get a discount if you have the Hong Kong or tropical bar VIP card. also some BOGO coupons available online.
