Belgian Beer Options?
by Lumpy- 5 replies
Anyone who's read a Lumpy TR knows how much I detest the typical lager vomit of the Zona. While I do enjoy a good thick & chewy high-octane stout (which does present a few options at the breweries), my go-to favorite is a good Belgian beer. My regular location for a respite from the Zona ordinary has been the cooler at the Bosiger Brewpub in Zapato, but their hours are limited, and their selection dwindles at times. Also my bridge to that fine establishment may have been singed by a flame or two of my own ignition when I've been overserved and lost track of my Spanish-challenged tongue. So knowing I may be one trappist-fueled tirade from getting Maxwell Smarted fr…

I am not a tequila drinker or even a drinker any longer but I always thought Don Julio was a pretty good brand? I think I normally buy some for door prizes at my fiestas and I have a bottle of 1800 and a bottle of Patron for this next one. Am I buying trash for my guests?

Ruben’s Bar

Old, tiny bar on Sexta. Havent been in a while. Was a spectacle. Some lady was wasted and passed out on bar, then tried to get up and kept falling down. Went back to sleep. Then woke up when I put ACDC on jukebox(which is excellent by the way and 4 songs for $1) and started dancing. For sure there are guys that would fuck her based on their photos. To each their own. Bought caguamas for the patrons and one guy refused as he said I was secretly videotaping her. Guess that was my cue to leave. FullSizeRender.mov

Escape Club

This is a pretty decent regular bar with a dance floor. They play a large variety of music: reggaeton, banda, some oldies, etc. I took a date here. I don't remember the exact figures, but cover was about 30 USD for the two of us and included in and out privileges all night. The real shocker to me was that a table was only about 15 USD and included unlimited drinks all night with the same Mesero. This included beer, cocktails, shots, the works. The drinks we ordered would have been easily over 300 USD in the states. Inside is very, very loud but there are some tables near the edges or outside where it's not so bad. I'd go back. https://www.yelp.com/biz/…

This is my favorite after dinner drink in ALL of Mexico. The tough part is how to explain the taste in a post How do you explain what chocolate tastes like to someone that has never had chocolate ? How do you explain what sex feels like to someone that has never had sex ? So to me this drink tastes like a Mexican Flan custard, that has been liquified and then blended with a shot a whiskey with that shot of whiskey not overwhelming the sweetness and taste of the Flan. Technically, this is really a combination of egg yolk, milk, sugar and alcohol. Notwithstanding how it is made I believe it is best prepared and consumed on the rocks. Ancient Mexican myth was tha…

Kaminari Brewing

Kaminari brewing in the Mestizo Tasting Room. Another craft brewery across the street from Dandy Del Sur. This block is becoming a craft brewery zone. I believe there are now 5 within 200-ft of each other. Some decent stouts and a red ale aligned with my taste preference. Things were getting cloudy as usual by the time I stumbled out, but I kinda recal the pints averaging about $5/. A bit pricy for Centro. I will be back though since I also kinda recall liking the flavors. Things were clouding up again.

Nostalgia: a new bar on Revolucion

It's not open just yet, but should be open by Saturday if all goes to plan. It will be a bar with live bands and also serve food. As the name implies, the live bands will play cover songs of old music, classic rock, etc. According to the owner, they should have live music during the afternoon on weekends, as well as at night. It will be located on Revolucion, more or less across the street from the 42 Sabores dessert place. It will be occupying the old Novedades Aladino tienda that sells random stuff for really cheap. The tienda has moved upstairs to the second floor and is accessible by a staircase next to the bar. The bar will be located on the first floor. …

Calle Francisco Madero 1270, off of Flores Magon. Right next door to Silenus Tap Room that I reviewed a couple of minutes ago. Another nice brewery with a good variety beers. Nice high tech lookng place with a higher level clientel observed. I don't fit in with those folks as usual, but I don't care. Only tried a few, so I'll have to go back and try more of their menu.

Madueno Brewing Co.

On Flores Magon across the street of Dandy Del Sur. I believe there used to be a different brewery/tasting room here pre-pandemic, but can't be certain because in pre-pandemic years, I had beer term memory loss. Beer selection is good and they serve food. I have never seen so many people in come in to get growlers refilled at any other brewery in TJ or Stateside. There must have been 20-people with 4-5 growlers each passing through as I was having dinner. Maybe they were going to be Christmas gifts, but just never saw growler activity like that before. Madueno Pineapple Shake appeared to be the crowd favorite. I didn't have a chance to try that one on this trip, bu…

Calle Francisco Madero 1250, off of Flores Magon. Nice brewery with a good variety beers. Some very good. Small place with very friendly staff offering lots of info on the TJ brewing community. I will be here every chance I get. My favorite was a Nut Brown Ale that I could drink everyday. Right around the corner from Madueno Brewing Company I reviewed a couple of weeks ago.

Insurgente Is Fighting Back Beer businesses on both sides of the border rally to support the currently closed brewery BY BETH DEMMON Published: 2019.12.17 01:49 Photo courtesy of Cervecería Insurgente Four months after Jaime Bonilla won the state of Baja California’s gubernatorial race, Cervecería Insurgente closed. After opening in 2010, the popular Tijuana brewery in Zona Rio quickly became one of the country’s most respected and pioneering craft breweries, helping boost Baja beer in the global beer conversation by racking up awards, accolades, and plenty of attention. But on October 5, 2019, officials f…

Drinks for the ladies
by Jello- 11 replies

A girl was in my room and she saw a small bottle of Jack Daniel's and asked me to let her try it. She took a sip and grimaced, hating it. I felt bad because she was in the mood and that was all I had. She told me a canned alcoholic cocktail they sell in the shops in her town that she and her friends like. I forgot it now. My question is do you guys have any suggestion on specifically popular small canned somewhat sweet alcoholic drinks I can keep in my room and also where to buy 2 or 3 of those. The girls will not trust a drink in an already opened container hence have to be in a small can or small bottle. The other question is, I am sure it is discussed rece…

La Justina

Tried this place out on East side of Revolucion. Kinda too classy for my unsophisticated style. Favorites appeared to be exotic multi flavored/multi liquor concoctions that to not seem to do justice to the expensive liquors that were being used. Being an unsophisticated beer person, $15 for 2-beers and an order of fries seemed a little steep for Zona Centro. It's definitely a MILF hangout if that's your thing. Fancy drinks take 5-10 minutes to prepare. They use spinning ice chilling for glasses, mixing spoons, smashers, blow torches, fruits, vegies, flowers, dry spices, illegal drugs, kitchen sink, and everything else you can think of. Fries took 20-minutes to …

Sci Hop Brewery

They moved from their upstairs spot at Plaza Fiesta to La Recta on Calle Sonora in Chapu across from the mall. You can now order online to get bottles cheap and you can mix and match bottles. Their green alien beer, Barbarella blueberry ale, Space Viking and Hazy IPA are all excellent. You can get the prices in attached photo and order online for pickup. Use code 6pack, 12pack and 24pack. https://www.scihop.com.mx 24 pack for 700 pesos comes out to $1.50 a beer which is ridiculous. The bottles have cool art so putting together a 6 pack with different bottles is a good gift. Also merch available. At the location until the end of the year an…

Transpensinsular Brewery on Revo 1 2

FF and I checked out Transpeninsular yesterday. It's paired with the old Margarita's Village and located up the stairs between the Caliente and parking garage on Revolucion (between 3rd and 4th). Yesterday, Cinco de Mayo, was their grand opening. They had a really nice selection of fifteen craft brews. My favorite was their "Other" brown. The beers were 80p apiece, which seems a tad steep, but maybe I'm just spoiled by all the other cheap beer available in TJ. The bartender asked if was interested in getting a growler, but didn't know how much it was. After much discussing behind the bar, they came up with 280p, which isn't bad for a full growler. I asked if I could bring…
