I didn't see a specific "Canada" section, so feel free to move this if appropriate. My information is from a LONG time ago, mongering around the PNW area. As a young pup, I visited Vancouver frequently with family. On one evening trip to get some snacks, I ran across a residential area with a huge line of cars. Strange, I thought. I decided to follow. The cars wandered around about a six square block area, mostly apartment buildings. Very residential (i.e., not even a 7/11 or such nearby). I never thought I would travel to Africa, let alone Dakar in Senegal, but an opportunity came up, so I took it. Unfortunately mi amigo @Sargon couldn't join me on this trip. I did some research online about Dakar prior to my trip. Overall it is considered fairly safe, just be aware of your surroundings. Taxis will rip you off at every opportunity. The standard charge is ~5000 Francs ($1 ~ 600 Francs) about $8. However, you should not pay more than about 2500 for most rides. Do be careful using taxis as I read reports of people being driven to sketchy areas and then robbed. I was picked up at the airport by the hotel shuttle ($30) for the ~one hour ride to …
