I think I meant it in the sense that there are no truly upscale hotels in the sense of luxury five-star places, such at the Ritz, IHG Presidente, Fairmont, etc. TJ has a Hyatt place, but not a Grand Hyatt, for example. Hyatt Place (which I think is probably the nicest hotel in TJ) is a very pleasant place to stay, but it is not designed to be real luxury. I may agree to disagree. I don't require much, only a comfy bed and A/C when it's hot. Ticuan does have comfy mattresses yet no pool and I'm a swimmer, always have been. Check out @TJ Flyer's most recent post as there seems to be even nicer hotels going up. Link to comment
TJ Flyer July 29 Share July 29 Point is TJ is evolving with the reinvention of the Centro with new condo, apartment towers, specialty stores, cool new cafes, bistros and boutique hotels. And, the primary upscale areas of Cacho and Chapu are getting new condo towers, hotels, etc. In my mind, a "full-service hotel" has 24 hour room service, onsite restaurant (s), bar, fitness room, perhaps a spa and beauty salon, meeting space and banquet rooms. Just a handful of those in TJ currently but more coming, including more US and international chains... Despite what some think, these projects are designed for the local and national market. Not the gringo monger market. Just as well as the love motels scattered around TV are designed for business guys to fuck their secretary or mistress, or married couples with kids to get out of their house to get some privacy to fuck, watch porn, etc. or for adult kids that still live home and want to go some place nice to fuck. You will find love motels in most every city of any size in Mexico. They know how to do this right rather than the shitbox crack house motels in the US that street hookers use.... 3 2 Link to comment

That's why I think we're seeing so many "business-oriented" hotels springing up. Business travelers don't want the hassle of crossing the border daily, yet don't want to stay in the Mexican equivalent of a Motel 6. And few businesses now will spring for full-on First Class treatment. Not for flights, not for hotels. But they will pay for nicer places like, as you said, Fairfield, Hyatt Place, Marriott, and so forth. Much like why most trans-Pacific carriers have discontinued First Class cabins on their planes. Businesses won't pay for it, and most folks using it were doing so by using points upgrades. I, too, love the "Love Motels" in Mexico. So much more civilized. And there's one for every budget. 2 Link to comment

Many Expats that stay in Mexico seasonally - like during the high season in Mexico and they avoid the cold winters back in northern US states - that drive back and forth from the US to their homes or condos (purchased or leased) in Sinaloa (Mazatlan), Nayarit (Sayulita, etc.), Jalisco (Puerto Vallarta, Allijic at Lake Chapala) - will stay overnight at love motels in Sonora, Sinaloa, etc. They like to be able to have their car full of all their shit safely locked in the garage at their motel room.... Probably the biggest concentration of high-end 4 and 5 star hotels I have seen in Mexico was in Mexico City in La Reforma and Polanco. Brands like Four Seasons, Intercontinental, JW Marriott, Hyatt, etc. 4 Link to comment
