Costa Rica Comparisons

So I finally relocated to Las Vegas after a lifetime on the east coast. One of the reasons for moving was to be close to TJ.

All of my mongering has been done in Costa Rica up until now.

For those who have visited both places...is there any reason to go to Costa Rica if TJ is a one-hour plane ride away?

Both places have been ruined by too many gringos. So... if it's just girls you're after, save the long flightb and stick with TJ.

I've been to both and I'll say yes there is.

They're completely different.

  • There's nothing like Sportsmans in TJ. No hotel with a sports bar that's fairly chill with girls that come by through the day and night and for the most part are pretty chill and low pressure
  • There's also nothing like ZN in CR. No high pressure, high action, loud, obnoxious, strip club/brothel. Cocal in Jaco isn't even close
  • There's no escort scene to speak of in CR.
  • TJ is more business like, CR at times almost feels desperate. I've got some stories...
  • TJ is better if you interested in TLN and weekend trips with someone.
  • CR is far better if you're interested in getting out and seeing a what else the country has to offer. Within a 3 hour drive of San Jose you can either be at beautiful beaches, or some of the most amazing hot springs I've ever seen.  Costa Ricans take great pride in their natural resources and take good care of them. It's harder to get a good TLN date for those trips though.
  • The food is FAR better in TJ and Baja. CR food is pretty bland TBH.

If you're just after girls, go to TJ. If you want food and girls, go to TJ. If you want to relax in a no pressure environment and have girls around, go to CR. If you want outdoor activities and girls, go to CR.

End of this, I see TJ as the better place for weekends with girls around, and CR as the better place for vacations with girls around. Both have pros and cons, I wouldn't replace one just because you have access to the other.

Edited to add: I would LOVE to see a place like Sportsmans in TJ. I do miss the vibe there.

Great summary. I will add on to the point about other things to do: If you have friends and family who know where you are going, Costa Rica is a LOT easier to explain. You tell people that you are in Tijuana for the weekend and they are going to think all kinds of sordid thoughts. Tell them you are going to Costa Rica and you have all kinds of valid touristy things to talk about.

I almost never tell people I'm going to Tijuana. I visit "Southern California" and might make a quick trip to "Baja" for the food or shopping. Maybe I went down to "Ensenada" for the day. If you go to Costa Rica, no one has "donkey shows" or drug cartels as the first things to come to mind.

When I was in a spot where I was flying to go to TJ, I basically never said I was going to even to the San Diego area.  Like many, I have people in my life who are curious about what I do, ask questions, and are not stupid.  So, to wit:

1) I pretended that I never missed Comic Con in San Diego.  I would actually research what went on there, comic book lore, video games, and the other things those dorks do.  And I even went down to Comic Con once to see it.  Enjoyed the vibe but didn't go to any of the events.  That explained one TJ trip a year.

2) Early in my mongering career I flirted with this almost mystical attachment to southern California and the city of San Diego.  Said things like I would love to live there but my work is elsewhere and oh those taxes.  This really came off flat, though, so I retreated from this.

3) What really worked was pretending that I basically had a gambling problem and the way I handled it was by making myself the deal that I could gamble in Vegas, where at least I would make of a real life experience out of it.  People believed this so readily that it was a little insulting.  So, for a while I was going off to Las Vegas all the time.

4) One of the hardest things for me to explain was my sudden ability to speak Spanish at an intermediate/communicative level.  This came up once when I went with family down to Puerto Vallarta.  My family aren't idiots, they know that I would not be able to have 10 minute conversations with people based on my two years of high school Spanish, and I had never talked about learning Spanish.  I had to draw upon a citizen of the world, I live a life of intellectual curiosity  explanation (really not far from the truth).  I think it worked because really what are they going to think?  That I learned Spanish by going to Mexico to bang prostitutes?  That would be crazy.

5) In terms of keeping the hobby on the downlow, a big challenge was actually the Mexican ring-tone.  I had it leak out once to a family member and they brought it up years later.  Developed an MO so that I did not take calls in Mexico.

6) After all of this, my Mexican cleaning lady figured it all out.  Also, I have a long-time friend who managed to piece it together, though I had to fill him in on the details.

If your considering just the girls, I think TJ's proximity to the US has an impact in that many more of its A-list places are glammed up like US strip clubs to draw in the cross-border traffic, and the escort action is generally more readily and competently available.  Whether you see that as an attraction or disappointment, it's a difference.
