Yes, true that.  Both are bad optics.

The only point I would like to make, is in my experience the route that I discussed--San Luis Rey to Puerto Penasco, is fairly busy with many commercial and local traffic!

In fact, if you pull over to take a couple minute "pit-stop" (You guys know what I mean--there's not alot of bathrooms around)-you need to watch that a passing vehicle doesn't

see you! So, being that we will be traveling prime time (0900-1300) on a Thursday, that this will deter a carjacking experience?? There's always plenty of traffic on this well

traveled section of MEX-3.

(Note: I could travel solo as well)--note taking a bus isn't an option for me, since I love the freedom of having my own vehicle.

Thoughts folks????????

Sounds like you are minimizing the risks, but some risk is still there.  I would do it.

Here you go.  The pin is where my friend was carjacked but the encircled area is where other carjackings have been happening unfortunately.  With highway 2 being the worst between the pin which is Y Griega and Santa Ana.

@Surfer 123. great thanks!

Right, this has always been a cartel infused area!

I will limit myself to staying NORTH of Puerto Penasco, and certainly realize that anyone can be a victim at any time, any where.

Just have to weigh the odds.

Thanks for sharing the area of interest!

VIVA MEXICO!

Well I am shocked, my buddies truck was found and some young chubby fucker was caught.  Apparently these car jackers had killed a well liked soccer player in Caborca in late August.  Looks like the police knew who they were and had been looking for them.  They had taken the plates off my friends trucks and were fleeing the police when they got stuck.  A few of them got away but the chubby guy was caught.

He already made an insurance claim so not sure what happens now, but the truck looks pretty beat.  Plus the truck is being held as part of the court case.  I suspect the truck will sit in an impound yard in Caborca for a time until it gets stolen again out of the impound yard.  Dually trucks in that part of Sonora are like gold as they need them to tow the trailers full of mota.

A bit of an update...that chubby fucker was the one who brutally shot the soccer player.  They had some type of argument at an Oxxo and the guy decided to shoot him with one of the automatic weapons as the kid was running away.  When the kid fell the chubby fucker walked up to him and unloaded a bunch more rounds into the kid as he was lying on the ground.

Very good possibility of chubby fucker and the others involved getting disappeared :snoozer:before anything goes to court as the murdered kid was a well liked soccer star and the whole town is pissed off.  Hopefully, if that happens it is very public as that may act as some deterrent to these young 20 something narco pieces of shit.

Well my two friends almost got carjacked again on Wednesday.  This time they were driving in 2 separate trucks with the lead truck towing a big enclosed trailer.  Not far from Sonoyta they noticed a Tahoe and an F150, that had passed them going the opposite direction, flip a u-turn and were coming up on them at high speed.  The truck towing the trailer stayed in the right lane and my other friend in the other truck drove into the oncoming traffic lane so they were essentially blocking the road so the car jackers could not get up next to them.  They came around a corner and saw some military trucks so they quickly stopped next to the military and the potential car jackers stopped and flipped another u-turn and sped off.

They explained to the military what had happened and they basically told them yeah we know they are narcos but not much we can do right now so be careful.  Which is nuts as apparently over 20 other people were car jacked including some elderly Americans.  All these car jacked people were seen walking on the road between Sonoyta and Caborca.

The Caborca area is a mess and very dangerous.  That soccer player who was murdered was a Xolos team member.  Here are some pics from I believe yesterday of trucks with armed dudes just cruising down the highway outside of Penasco towards Caborca.  So if anybody has plans to head anywhere East of Sonoyta and Penasco by car I would double think those plans.

This video was shot outside of Caborca today or yesterday and is very graphic just fyi.

No, from what I understand it is narcos killing other low level narcos as a message and those guys are not official military.  There were a few comments on the video that essentially said...good, 2 less scumbags but others were concerned at how young the one guy was.

🔵 Tufesa bus kidnapped and robbed during the morning on the road Caborca-Altar
Caborca.- The passengers of the Tufesa line bus with number 640 were kidnapped and stripped of their belongings when five men ′′ hooded ′′ climbed to the unit over the Caborca-Altar stretch.
Families of the crew members of this transport unit circulating from Tijuana bound for Mazatlan, Sinaloa, alerted the authorities after they received messages telling them that they were stripping them of their belongings at gunpoint.
They also pointed out, their families that on the road section Caborca to Santa Ana, they removed the elderly and underage people from the bus without leaving them phones or luggage.
During the first hours of this Sunday one of the passengers of the bus, confirmed that they were released when arriving at the central trucker and the assailants already with the loot, they removed the hoods and put mouth covers to get off the bus and get lost between the other passengers without being caught.
With information from Ariete Caborca
⚠️ At the moment, the FGJE Sonora doesn't report anything about the Tufesa kidnapped in Caborca.
Either way the case is being verified.

I'm still going, probably this weekend or next week.  If you are not driving about 30 minutes East of the Mayan Palace in Penasco or the Sonoyta road to Caborca then you'll be fine.

I've driven the Mexicali route to Penasco too many times to count and more often than not finishing the last half in the dark because the of the sun setting earlier now.  So I'll be sure to be off that road not much later than sunset.  I found some throwable tire spikes online that I may order as an insurance policy and use only if I'm certain that something is not right.  I've had only 1 scary instance involving a truck and guys with guns back in 2012 I think and it was in the same general area where the shit show is now but on the coastal road by Puerto Libertad.

The general Caborca area is spiraling out of control so fast that I'm certain the government will at least try to bring the hammer down soon.  Now that these idiots have hijacked a bus and are causing trouble for the people that work the mines in the area.  In Y Griega where my friend was carjacked the military found a huge stash of automatic weapons including a Barrett .50 cal and 3 more stolen vehicles this morning.

Borderland beat, twitter, FB, etc. has some new videos of what has happened lately.

This one I have no issues with.  Bad guys getting other bad guys.

This one is pretty awful.

Fucking hell, now the cartel idiots carjacked a family from Az yesterday about in the exact same spot where my friend was carjacked.  They were on their way to Puerto Lobos which is on the coast about an hour and half South of Penasco.  Took their truck, and trailer full of quads and coolers and food and cell phones.  Basically everything they had for their vacation.

Copied and pasted from FB.

After having some time to gather my thoughts, I decided to post my story here. This evening as my husband and I and our two youngest daughters were headed down to Mexico, my family was high jacked on the road. From what we can gather, there must have been someone waiting on the side of the road looking for the perfect opportunity. We had been traveling in our 2017 Toyota Tundra TRD PRO along with our 20 foot tandem axle trailer that was carrying 3 quads, one of my husbands mountain bikes, all our ice chests as well as our luggage and food for several days. About 6:00 PM a grey sedan pulled up alongside the drivers side door and pulled out a AK-47 and pointed it directly at my husband. He was ordered to pull over or be shot. Immediately my husband pulled over and was ordered out of truck with a machine gun still pointed at his face. As he got out of the car, a member of the cartel aka drug member began to get inside the truck with our daughters and myself still inside. Recognizing that the cartel member was going to drive away with his family still inside, Mason pleaded with the man to let his family get out. Within seconds we all made a snap decision and exited the car immediately. It was so immediate in fact that as the truck drove away, all the doors were still opened. Right before the cartel member left, he ordered my husband Mason and I to give him our phones and sped away without hesitation. As we stood in the middle of the Highway, we were all in shock. It took a quick second to process what had just happened before the fear that we could still be in eminent danger hit me with full force. Quickly I grabbed both of my daughters and ran them into a nearby field. My youngest daughter Claira had no shoes as we ran through briers and tall bushes. Meanwhile, Mason ran back up to the road to try to wave someone down. After a few minutes a van from a nearby mine stopped to see what was the matter. Because Mason speaks Spanish, he was able to relay the story of what had just happened. The miners had our family quickly load their van and took us down a side dirt road. At this point, both of the girls were in tears while one of them began to hyperventilate. Because I don’t speak or understand perfect Spanish, I didn’t understand who we were with or where we were going. For another few seconds, I thought that this could also be part of the cartel and they wanted our family. Quickly Mason reassured me that we were safe. Within 10 minutes we arrived at a Mexican military outpost and were being escorted through the barbed wire fence. Once again, Mason handed the communications while I took the girls into a cinder block bunker. At this point we were able to make some very important calls. I was able to contact our dear friends Aimee and Phil Lamoreaux who quickly ran over to my neighbors home who is an active CIA agent. I gave them the information they needed and our current location. Within moments, we were on the phone with Washington and those who could help us. The American Consulate was notified and we were told that help was on the way. After about 30 minutes at the outpost, we again boarded another mining van which would take us to Rocky Point to safety. Because the border closes at 8:00 PM, we were informed that we could not get home tonight. We were dropped off at the Las Palomas Resort where we went inside to see if we could stay for the night. Upon entering, we were told that the resort was at 100% capacity and no rooms were available. As we walked back into the lobby, we saw another couple just arriving to check in. They saw our disheveled state and asked us if we were all right. We told them our story and the situation we were in. Without hesitation they both decided to have us stay with them for the evening. They own a 3 room flat on the 8th floor and said they had 2 extra beds. It took just a look at our daughters and their faces to know we would gladly and gratefully accept their offer. Now here I sit in this borrowed, beautiful room in dirty clothes without any possessions we came with and beyond grateful for the blessings of this day. My family is safe, our children were not taken, our lives were prolonged and I am reminded again that God lives and watches over each of us. Tomorrow the American Consulate will arrive and escort us home after the border opens. A huge thank you to each of our children back at home who helped in every possible way they could and for Ange and Sal Alcantar for jumping in quickly to cancel all our bank cards/visas.
To everyone else, thank you all or your prayers and concern.
Much love, Natalie and Mason

For those mean spirited people ou there who are sending messages to my children saying this is an attention grabbing, made up story, shame on you. In no way would we ever wish this upon any family. You clearly do not know the caliber of our family and the integrity that we uphold.
