I'm not a friend of Bill W but it's no big deal to not drink at the clubs in TJ.  Expect to pay about 45pesos for a bottle of water or juice or a Coke (same price as a beer) but they won't pressure you to drink down there.... other than once in a while the meseros run around with a bottle of tequila but you can wave them off.

If you go to HK when they have the door charge, you'll be handed a beer at the door.  Take it right up to the bar and trade it for a juice or a Coke or a water.  None of us drink that shitty warm beer from the door anyway.

I don't think TJ iwould be a bad place unless just being around drinking bothers you.  I as a rule don't like to get drunk down there.  I always say "tengo gota" and get water or coke. The biggest risk of ordering coke in la zona is that the diet coke looks the same as real coke and is frequently given instead.

I have seen several AA meeting places throughout TJ--I forgot the locations--

However there is one on the second floor of an office/retail center next door to the Soriana Supermarket on Constitution between 8th and 7th Street!

I stopped in a couple years ago, on behalf of one of my fav.s and they were very friendly.

Good Luck!

This is an interesting question. I know what it means, as I have friends who are Bill W. friends. However, I can't say that any of them go to TJ to monger. I do have some friends that I've met in TJ who don't drink in TJ. Of those friends I've never actually asked if they are friends of Bill W., they've just said they don't drink, or only order water or soda, but I haven't ever asked if they're in a program. I can appreciate how some people compartmentalize.

Some would consider me a friend of Bill W. While the more hard nosed members of the programs would not.

I was addicted to drugs in my late teens and early 20s and have not used drugs since 2004. There were a few things that helped me get clean but participation in a 12 step group was by far the most critical. I was very involved in meetings and the program for about 5 years but no longer attend and do drink alcohol from time to time (although it is not something I do regularly or heavily).

I have seen numerous signs for Spanish AA groups thoughout TJ. I have also walked past the "Serenity by the Sea" group in Playas and looked it up online, it is an English speaking group.

I agree with what others have said about the zona clubs. The meseros don't care what you are drinking, they just want you to buy something so they can make some money. I regularly order bottled water in the clubs and the meseros couldn't care less. Sometimes the girls will ask about why I'm drinking water but they don't really care either, they just want your money too.

IMHO the zona would not be a good place to go for anyone struggling to stay clean/sober or in early recovery from alcohol and/or drug addiction because both are basically everywhere ( and as many of us know in certain locations guys are literally yelling at you to get you to buy drugs). If someone who was struggling to stay clean and/or sober had a friend with them who was trying to do the same that might be different. Also, ordering escorts might be a better option for someone in this position.

I have not craved or had a desire to do drugs in many years and alcohol is not a problem for me so being in the zona does not bother me. However, I think going down there would have been very risky for me for the first several years after I got clean.

Anyway...hope this helps...and just my 2 cents of course...

Oh this is really true.  For me, I use to only drink twice a week and not surprisingly they were the two days per week that I went to seek the comforts of hedonistic action in TJ. I just never felt comfortable in any zona bar until the completion of at least my 4th beer. Yep, I admit it, I used alcohol to comfort my nerves and sensationalize my orgasms. Thankfully, I now only use alcohol as anesthesia to the pain associated with living so I no longer have TJ to blame.

I rarely drink - maybe a beer every couple weeks. The meseros don't care as others have said, but I have gotten some pressure from chicas about not drinking. I assume just like men want women to drunk to get lose with their pussy, chicas want want guys drunk to get lose with their wallets.

While I have a number of vices, drinking and drugs are not ones I have. I agree with other amigos that ZN would probably be a very bad place for someone who does.

A possible alternative to Zona Norte, escorts and telegram girls are available elsewhere in Tijuana. This might let one get their sexual fill without the party atmosphere of the Zona.

I wish you well amigo.

If you are a friend of Bill W, I would think that La Zona would be a very dangerous place for you to hang out.  But it also might depend on  where  you are in your sobriety, and the depth & strength of your will power.  Some  recovering alcoholics shouldn’t be around alcohol at all, and some have progressed to the point of being able to be around it without any desire or temptation to have a drink .   Like most things, I think it can be different for different people.   But having a problem with alcohol, and being surrounded by it  I would imagine could be both difficult & tempting .  Like trying to kick a drug habit, but continuing to hang around friends that use drugs,, or trying to give up Mongering & pussy, but continuing to frequent  and visit  La Zona.  :dunno:.  Only the individual knows his desires, limitations, struggles ,  temptations and the like.  I would only only hope that the person knows themself and their limitations well  enough , and are honest enough with themself, to know whether or not they could navigate  the environment of “Pussyland” & “La Zona”, without causing detriment to themself.

The zona has been very bad for me in terms of drinking.  I tend to 'get on a roll' at home in terms of not drinking, then I go crazy in the zona, and my roll is invariably finished when I get home and I have to start a new effort in terms of clean living.  I suspect that many mongers are of the addictive personality type and amongst amigos you will see many who have issues with alcohol and are seen, like me , at the card room.

I have been sober for ten years. This is the last of my “vices”.  I went to TJ in my 20s, overindulged and was very reckless. I enjoy my sober trips much more than my drunken trips. I am completely aware of my surroundings, spend less money and concentrate on what’s important..fucking as many chicas as possible. As long as you order something, the  messeros don’t care. I have had women be pretty pushy and usually it just takes a very stern comment that you do not drink “nunca” and they will leave you alone.

I am a daytime, weekday monger (primarily).  I very rarely drink, mostly because I have to drive home, but also because I want to keep my senses about me in La Zona.

I drink Diet Coke (too much) while in La Zona and I have found that most chicas (at least the daytime, non-shark chicas) prefer a guy that is not sloppy drunk.

Exactly. In my experience, some sober people are fine sitting in bars and some should never enter a bar again. I didn’t until I was sober for around six years. I am fine now but would have never gone to ZN in my first couple years of sobriety. Only YOU know your true limitations.

All summed up here.  I remembered I felt a dreadful feeling when he snatched that bottle of booze away.
