Going in April. Newb questions.

Recommended Posts

Superman707

Hey guys heading in mid april. Middle of the week. Would appreciate some insight from more of the experienced folks here.

1. How do you think the weather will be mid April?

2. Staying in SD for 3 days and planning on leaving SD around 7 or 8pm every night and coming back around 2 to 3am every morning. Do you think its safe to travel back at this time via taxi/uber?

3. Also I want to bring back lots of tequila bottles. Are there any legit places like liquor stores to buy them at 2 or 3am?

Thats all I can think of for now. Any insight would be helpful. I will ask more questions if any come to mind. Thanks in advance!

1. Weather will be slightly cool in the evenings and heading towards warm (85 degrees) during the days.

2. Travel via Uber or taxi at that hour should fine.  There is also the HK Shuttle to the border or the Chicago Club Shuttle to the border.

3. No place to buy at that hour.  Also, if you are a California resident, by law you can only cross one liter of liquor per month duty free.  However it's possible you can cross more at a time if you're prepared to pay the import duty on it.  IIRC, someone on here brought back three bottles or something that was over the limit (was that you, @PhordPhan?) and had their checkbook at hand to pay the extra duty and the agent just waved him through rather than hassling with figuring out the fees for it.  YMMV.

Nope, not me. I note that you can take a LOT more liquor into Mexico than you can bring out of it. But OP may have difficulties unless, as you said, he declares them and pays the duty. I'm not sure what "lots" means in this context, but it sounds like more than 2 or 3.

Note to OP, liquor sales in TJ stop at 2am. Even the motels have signs stating that they will not bring booze to the rooms between 2am and 10am. So, best plan is to buy a bottle or two each day and cross them back into SD. By the end of 3 days you'll have several. Not sure if that qualifies as "lots."

Do you have things to do in San Diego? Rather than crossing back at 2 AM everyday, you could just stay in town.

I only declare one (1) bottle of alcohol (750 ml--1 liter) when I cross back into USA, and all the agents that I have encountered are cool with that!

I wouldn't push it IMO. I'm a California resident, so I need to follow the rules regarding being from California. Now, if you are from another State, then you may able to bring back

more, without paying duty--check out the website for cbp.

Have fun!

My friend that passed last year , lived back & forth between TJ and the U.S.   He was a vodka drinker, and often when he returned to the states, he would often bring large amounts of vodka back , in water bottles.  He told me that only once, a CBP officer asked him why he had so much water.  He told the CBP that he simply really liked that particular brand of water.  Good thing they never checked his bottles of “water”.

Ps. I would not suggest doing this.

He would also go to Soriana & Calimax when they had sales on alcohol , and buy 20 or 30 bottles of Vodka :facepalm:

I recommend getting a room at Cascadas Hotel for the 3 nights. (As an addition to your SD hotel, which I presume is for a business trip, but you didn't say).

Since you intend to be in TJ for many hours each night, this option provides you with a centralized spot to bring multiple chicas and relax in between.

You can bring chicas from several nearby bars and some Street Girls too. If you already have a room, you do not have to pay the short-term room rate each time you take a chica to your room.

When the trip gets closer you should make a room reservation on the Hotel Cascadas website. You do not have to pay when making the reservation, you pay at Check-in. You will be able to come and go as you please, and leave a small travel bag there when you're going back to SD each morning.

This option should provide you with the most comfort and convenience for your 3 day visit.

@Haus brings up a good point - having a room when you come down is great, especially if you're planning to drink and maybe don't feel like crossing back over or just want a spot to rest up for a few between arribas.  Plus you can bring in chicas without the dreaded knock.

A room is the way to go.  Do some research on the board - a lot of people have their hotel preferences based on noise, facilities, etc.  If you want to see escorts, you shouldn't be in La Zona, etc.   If you factor in all the time spent commuting and going through the immigration line, you may find you have a full extra day to enjoy in TJ if you skip the SD commute.

Easter is April 12 this year. Could be wrong, but I always assumed Holy Week would be a bad time to go to La Zona. If you catch Spring Break, go to Rosarito and try your luck. You might get some top rated amateurs instead of the TJ pros!

Thanks for the quick replies guys. Im going April 14th to 17th so its middle of the week. Im taking a buddy with me and he wanted to check out SD as well. Im going more for the mongering scene. Last time I went was in costa rica 6 years ago.

I have a couple of more questions:

1. Is smoking ciggs allowed in the clubs? Not a everyday smoker but I like to have a smoke on vacations. Not a big deal if they dont

2. Can I buy a bottle of tequila and leave it at the front desk of lets say hong kong and pick it up on my way out?

3. Do we get searched on the way into Mexico? I would like to take a disposable THC cartridge pen when crossing in to TJ and just throw it away before I cross back. I hear marijuana is legal on both sides but you cant take any back and forth.

Again, your input is much appreciated. Looking forward to a great time and will be posting my report following my trip!

1. Yes, you can smoke in all the clubs in Zona Norte.  A pack of cigarettes is available at the OXXOs nearby (OXXO is the 7-11 of Mexico).  About 50p for a pack.

2. You can possibly do that.  It's a 50/50 as to if it will still be there when you leave, especially if they do not know you as a regular.  However, if you book a room, you can leave it in your room.

3. They do run your bags through an xray scanner coming into Mexico.  You are correct in that it is illegal to cross the border either way with marijuana.  By the law, marijuana in small amounts is legal in MX but I can assure you that no official there will recognize that law and will instead hassle you and/or arrest you.

They don't usually search you but they do have dogs out on occasion. Don't break the law. Not worth the risk.

FWIW, it seems that bringing a vape pen into Mexico is something of a gray area. They are illegal to import. How that affects bringing your own, I don't know. But, it's something to consider.

Finding drugs is a dream of many Mexican cops.  DON'T DO IT.  Even if pot is legal, it is in a concentrated form and the cop that finds it on you will be thinking about birthday presents, next month's rent, next Christmas, date night with la vieja and date night with the novia.  If what you bring is legal you will need to convonce the cop that a) you know it is legal and b) you are not scared shitless in going to Mexican jail.  That might take a long time!

I believe that package liquor stores must quit selling at Midnight.  I don't think you can take more than a 5th back to the US but I am no expert.  I do not believe pot is legal, it I believe has been decriminalized, but good luck with that.

Bring a small back pack.  Put the liquor in the backpack and check the backpack at the HK door.  I use a small tsa lock on the zippers of the backpack and have never had a problem with anything missing.

Hell yeah bro will do!

And thanks everyone else for the heads up. Maybe Ill smoke and take an edible in my room in SD. Edible takes a good couple hours to kick in anyways.

The backpack with a lock is a good Idea. Im leaning towards buying a bunch of bottles on the last day and just paying the duty on them. I really like mexican tequila as its usually 35 to 38% and not 40% like the US stuff. You really get a better taste from it. Now I just gotta make sure I find a legit place to buy it from😅

Thanks again guys, I really appreciate the advice!
