Malena Restaurant Visit: April 29, 2023 Ah, the perplexing case of the Plaza Peninsula restaurants. With a "Merlena" and a "Malena" in close proximity, it's a brand name battle for the ages. But fear not, for our intrepid reviewer has braved the confusion and ventured into the realm of Malena. If Merlina is for the top 1%, then Malena is for the remaining middle class, where the possibilities are endless and the adventures are abundant as a proud member of the 20% club, where we may embrace the joys of being normal, average, and delightfully unextraordinary. Now, let's talk fashion-forward maitre d's. Sporting clear masks, they give off an otherwo…

Went to TJ on Saturday around 3pm just as this historic rainfall started to break. Since I stuck mostly on the Rapida to Playas and back, aside from new potholes and rocks on the road seemed Ok with no traffic jams. There was hail 🧊 in Playas Fri night and Sat morning. Had reservations at a restaurant in Cacho but then opted to buy some Ribeye at Vons and we ate in to keep away from the flooded areas. Traffic was relatively light returning to the U.S. as well as going into Mexico.

Went here for a special occasion. It used to be La Caza Club. The layout is very similar (restaurant on the left side and a bar/lounge on the right side as you enter). The platform on the far left that used to have a live band, is now all restaurant seating. Much better, since the last time I was here as Caza Club the music was louder than I prefer but not Negro Durasso loud. Have a very enjoyable meal of food, company and ambiance. I liked most of the dishes but one fell short. The duck was my favorite dish (like a carnitas style). Funny, of our group our tastes varied a lot, some felt one dish was their favorite and I didn’t care for it. One I really liked, an…

Elena Cocina de la Baja - Valle de Guadalupe
by PhordPhan- 5 replies

During our last trip to VdG I made reservations at Elena. It was fairly easy to find, but a bit weird in that one half of the building is a lively disco, and the two halves are only separated by curtains. So, the restaurant gets pretty noisy when the party next door starts to heat up. The decor was interesting. The service top notch. The menu had a lot of good sounding items. They, too, seem to have been bitten by the gold bug. I don't care, I'm not forking over $200 for a steak anywhere. There were better alternatives. The freebie was this scrumptious bread. It was yeasty and tasted a lot like the yeast rol…

Sanborn's Centro....

I took some amigas down to TJ for dental work this morning (Washington Dental Group). Old family friend and her longtime Costa Rican amiga (Tica), age 75. While my friend and I were waiting, we went across the street for coffee and a pan dulce. My friend had never been in a Sanborn's before, and she was surprised by the eclectic selection of merch in the store. I told her of the history of Sanborn's - two American brothers started it - and their landmark location in CDMX in the Centro Historico, La Casa de Azulejos. I have been in there and it's a must see. We went into the restaurant, maybe another table or two occupied, and our Mesara was named Esperanza from …

Savage

Saturday's weather was relatively nice, so I decided on a Sunday visit. Of course, it poured rain all day, off and on, and most of the night. I hate driving in TJ in the rain. Intersections flood, and far too often giant potholes disappear under the water, just waiting for you to drive over them. Anyway, Merlina was booked solid all afternoon and all night. So, I figured Plan B was in order. I booked a table, using OpenTable, at Savage. Then Rocky the Flying Squirrel, and I, headed to a joint with a jacuzzi to relax and quaff a bottle of wine. Around 5pm I got an email from OT, saying Savage had canceled my reservation. WTF? I rebooked for 15 minutes later and it was…

There's a new shopping mall, Plaza Peninsula, in Tijuana. It's situated out near Otay on the Via Rapida. The massive anchor store is Liverpool. A strange name for a department store, IMO. It's quite nice inside, chock full of expensive shit. The mall is only maybe 25% occupied at the moment, but many stores are in one stage or another of construction. Lots of high-end names. LOB, H&M, and others. Not belonging to their target demographic, I only know what 25 y/o Elaine tells me about the cool stores. But I digress. There is a very large underground parking structure, and the place is laid out on three levels. On the top level, adjacent to the CineMex theater (wh…

The Park

Last night my GF and I went to check out The Park - the new food hall located at New City in Colonia Libertad. Parking was easy and free - enter at the hotel parking entry just north of the Quartz Hotel & Spa. The Park has 10 or so different eateries, including offerings from Lionfish, WashMobile Tortas, Alma Verde, etc. Also, a nice wine bar, and separate cocktail bar to order drinks. Excellent protocols entering, menu via QR code to website, plus menus at each restaurant if you want to walk around and browse. You order from a server that comes to your tablet with a tablet, and then they deliver the drinks, food to your table. Very smooth. Our food an…

Ate here recently. Good food and good service at the right price. across the street from Praga cafe and kitty corner to hotel caesers. I recommend. But wifi didn't work as they said it would. I ate carne asada tacos. I've had much better carne asada, but the food quality is really good here. Look forward to trying out some other dishes.

Lorca (Spanish Restaurant)

One of the oldest restaurants in TJ and is still operating at a high level. Looks like they took away the honeymoon table near the terrace fireplace. A beautiful restaurant and great food. The highlight was the tortilla gamba(big shrimp), the paella, the bacalao empanada and pulpo in olive oil. By the time we finished our tapas, I was stuffed. Well cooked medium rare but I wasnt a fan of the sauces I prefer my steaks dry. They sent the wrong steak but was still great so no worries. Lot of menu terms were Spain spanish and terms Im not familiar with. Had to google many of the items.

I was going to get some tamales on 5ta y Ninos Heroes one day when my eye caught this place. It's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it type of place. Finally got around to trying it, as I had to coordinate schedules with a friend of mine (and almost thought twice about it cause of the sudden torrent of rain tonight). Beautiful decor. Red checkered tablecloths; small tables. There's a patio with a space heater and an inside. Probably maxes out at 60 people for the whole place. Me and my friend settled on a pizza, 1/2 pepperoni and 1/2 Hawaiian (she actually chose the Hawaiian). Thin crust, 16 slicer. Cheese was very good. Authentic sauce, tasted homemade. She chose an oran…

These pics are for the new location on 4th and Madero. I was on my way to new laundromat when I snapped these pics. I took my friend to the one on Agua Caliente last week. We'd never been before. I had Beef Enchiladas with Mole and her, a Taco Arrechera. Pre-game Guacamole. My plate was better than I thought, and so was her taco (though her taco and caramel buns are top notch anyways, in this case I'm referring to the food). Just fantastic. Price was about 420 pesos-she ordered a Cappucino and Pay De Elote to go. I will definitely be going back to KESJ, whichever locale is chosen. PS-I'm surprised I didn't take food pix. Guess I'll have to go back.

Took my civvie to mission 19 Friday night for dinner to start the evening. Food is excellent, a little pricey for tijuana, $120 with drinks for two. Very nice four course meal, this restaurant would compete with any 5-Star restaurant here, except the price is better. Service is outstanding. If you want to impress her, or celebrate a special occassion take her here. It is outstanding, english is no problem, as the waiters speak english, and english or spanish menus are readily available. She was very impressed I found this place, dress seemed to be casual, many local couples here, when we were here. For appetizers she ordered these pork tacos, may be the best taco I ever h…

La Rústica Café

A few weeks ago the SO and I had a little BBQ in the back yard and decided to head out afterwards for desert. We went to La Rústica Café which is out in a rural neighborhood in TJ called Panamericano. The idea behind this place was to build a diner primarily for breakfast and lunch that made you feel like you were eating somewhere in Valle de Guadalupe. IMHO this is a very cool and relaxing atmosphere to kill some time. In addition, the food and drinks were absolutely delicious. We ordered the Crepa con Fruta and the Crepa con Fresa: For drinks we both ordered a Tisano (herbal tea). The Fresa Mango tea and the Guayaba tea: The food was fan…

This is a new restaurant located in Paseo Chupultepec and is owned by the same group/person that owns Los Arcos. Pricey place, on par with Mision 19. I think the food is better though. We had a bone marrow dish that was quite good. I don't recall what else we had. If you're looking for a nice restaurant for a special event, this is a good choice.

Tabu Sushi - Plaza Rio
by PhordPhan- 1 reply

The other day Elaine, Mrs. Robinson, and I, decided to take in a movie at the Cinepolis VIP in Plaza Rio. (BTW, if you like black comedies, Bullet Train will check all your boxes. Elaine loved it. I think much of the humor went over Mrs. R's head. It's sort of "Pulp Fiction meets Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels"). We had some time before the movie started, so we popped out for some lunch. Tabu was the nearest decent-looking place, and they have a nice outdoor seating area. The weather was perfect for dining al fresco. Elaine and I got mojitos, Mrs. R a soda. Mrs. R can't drink much, at all. It interferes with some meds she takes and if sh…

Man, I must be dense. I knew that the street level of Azul was undertaking construction but I had NO CLUE they were turning it to a 2 story restaurant with great alley views and a slick modern interior. Lots more seating, a full bar on the 2nd floor and an english speaking bartender that was both helpful and informative... ? I thought I had been teleported out of the Alley into an alternate dimension! The girls clearly liked it, cause 4 tables were packed with girls but I could feel angry glares of photo-phobia as I wanted to take pictures around the place ? I will wait for Haus to give a better photo journal of the new Azul/Praga or whatever they’re calling i…

Etnia Cocina de Pueblo

The other day we wanted to try someplace new. Not far from RtFS's place is a relatively new place called Etnia. It's in a very small complex with terrible parking. But they have a valet who will take care of your car. It's located near all the fabricas in the area, so it looks like they get a lot of clientele from office people. We arrived a little after 1pm and the place was just about full. There were four (well, 3.5) of us, Rocky, me, hija, and nieta. The wait staff were still wearing those stupid masks, so I had a terrible time hearing and understanding him. They have a rather odd setup. You get seated and you can order your drink. They have two daily aguas fresc…
